Know your options
A heat pump moves heat rather than creating all of its heat at the equipment. It cools during warm weather and reverses operation to heat the home when temperatures fall. Because it works in both seasons, performance depends on the indoor and outdoor equipment, controls, airflow, drainage and how the system is configured.
If comfort changes, we look at the operating mode, thermostat settings, air movement, outdoor unit and the relationship with any backup heating system. That complete view is especially useful during changing Ontario weather, when normal operating behaviour can look different from a true equipment problem.
A ducted heat pump uses the home’s air distribution system for heating and cooling. Planning considers the existing ductwork, blower, electrical service, heat loss and heat gain, and whether another heat source will work alongside the heat pump.
Ductless heat pumps serve individual rooms or zones without a central duct system. The number and placement of indoor heads affects comfort and appearance. We discuss how the rooms are used and where equipment can be installed before outlining options.
